When Sunbathers Ran From Attack, Viral Image Depicts Rescuer Dashing ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the famous shoreline as her personal space. On a recent weekend night, she, along with numerous neighbors, detected loud noises echoing across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. She left her residence, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw signaled a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the avenue, talking to a pair who had run up the incline soaked, she noticed someone moving up behind her. The person was a lifeguard, running at full speed to Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was alone running in the path that all the others was trying to get away from, while holding that large equipment and without footwear … He’s running at something that surely every fibre in your being would signal you to move in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely full throttle running.”

A Symbol of Courage Amidst Crisis

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous instances of courage in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, police and paramedics caring for numerous victims.

Local Response and Solidarity

Doolan’s account was just one of many to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the beach facility next to the location of the attack becoming a makeshift medical station. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen responding bravely, for instance rushing into the surf to assist people who were struggling.

Following the attack, statements of gratitude flooded in. A social media message conveyed gratitude for the individuals who exhibited that “goodness will always conquer hatred”.

The squad of rescuers issued a statement, saying they were “still trying to comprehend what happened”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful words and support. We are overwhelmed by the kindness shown towards our responders,” the organization stated. “Eventually, we will tell our tales in the hope that it aids those impacted.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many full-time lifeguards, remarked that the staff performed exceptionally from the moment the shooting started until late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many emotional stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is incredible,” commented a local official.

“These individuals show selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous shores protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on that day should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the terror of this violent and horrific terrorist attack, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much positivity we have witnessed in the midst of such evil.”
