Virginia's New Governor Creates History as Virginia's Initial Woman State Leader

Over 250 years, Virginia has been led by seventy-four governors, each one of them men. This week, Abigail Spanberger overcame this longstanding tradition by securing the position as the initial woman to hold the office in Virginia's annals.

Centered Around Economic Issues and Targeted Criticism

Ex- US representative and Central Intelligence Agency operative won with a campaign that stressed everyday expenses and strategically challenged Donald Trump's policies instead of the person.

Beginnings and Education

Hailing from in the Garden State on 7 August 1979, she relocated to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at thirteen. Her father was an military serviceman who subsequently worked in police work; her mom was a healthcare professional and volunteer.

She studied at the University of Virginia, receiving a degree in literary arts. After graduating, she worked briefly as a educator before turning to a government work.

“I grew up knowing that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” Spanberger shared with attendees at a rally in Norfolk, Virginia last Saturday.

Professional Path

At the US Postal Inspection Service, she investigated involving drugs, abusers and money launderers. She served search and arrest warrants, frequently being the only woman on the operation squad. She then entered the Central Intelligence Agency and focused on national security, working covertly and internationally.

Personal Crossroads

In 2014, she and her spouse, an technical professional, faced a decision. Living on the west coast, they were contemplating another foreign posting. They pulled out a world map and inquired of their oldest child, then in elementary school, where they should go. Virginia, she answered, because “everyone we love lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger stated at her rally: “And so we opted to transition from a federal career, to service to community because she was right. Everyone we love lives in Virginia.”

Entry into Politics

Back in the commonwealth, she participated in Moms Demand Action, which addresses firearm incidents, and founded a youth group. In 2017, she resolved to run for Congress, which people told her was a “long shot” because no Democrat had secured the seventh district in decades.

“But I saw what Donald Trump was implementing with his actions and how he was dividing communities. And I noticed my representative consistently work against the Affordable Care Act. And I felt I had to take action. So spoiler: I won.”

Bipartisan Reputation

In the capital, she quickly became part of the moderate Democrats, a collection of moderate and budget-conscious lawmakers. She concentrated on less visible matters: bringing internet access to rural areas, combating drug trafficking and support for former troops.

She quickly established a standing for working with Republicans and was consistently rated as the most bipartisan member of the state's congressmembers. She was outspoken about messaging that she believed alienated independents, warning her party against partisan language that could be used against them in contested districts.

Centrist Group

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and Mikie Sherrill, she was dubbed a member of the “centrist alliance” in opposition to the progressive “squad” of AOC.

State Leadership Bid

In late 2023, she announced she would leave Congress for a another term and would rather run for governor in 2025.

Her platform centred on themes of public service, support for schools and infrastructure and protection of governing systems. Her federal service lent her credibility on national security issues and she described government work as a vocation rather than a career.

Election Victory

This helped her to counter rival candidate Winsome Earle-Sears’s criticisms on social topics, including the claim that Spanberger is an radical on individual freedoms and health care for transgender people.

Spanberger, who consistently argued that communities should determine whether transgender students can compete in competitive sports, cast her opponent as the contender more out of step with the middle of the commonwealth's citizens.
