The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together lies a intense contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
