Senegal's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
When I walk into the space, the young midfielder grabs a football he clings to until after our chat. It’s a simple symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and natural ability convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
In time, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his career in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Year and Continental Breakthrough
That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to victory and being named player of the tournament.
Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his family support to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. He admits he must to control his competitive fire, after being shown red early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.
Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals
With his current club, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. He is frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the main top prize in the future.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the game.
