Plans for Trump-Putin Meeting Postponed Days Following Budapest Negotiations Proposed

Currently exist "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to meet Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has stated.

Recently Trump stated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital within two weeks to examine the Ukraine conflict.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the White House clarified the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The White House withheld further information on why the talks had been delayed.

Earlier Events

The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting during a call with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with those familiar suggesting Trump had pressured him to cede large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

Nevertheless, on this week the American president supported a ceasefire proposal backed by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Freeze the lines where it stands," he said.

Russia has consistently objected against freezing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would merely represent a short-term truce.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the war required resolution, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of maximalist demands that include the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

Zelensky said discussions about the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.

He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday preceded reports that the US was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

Zelensky asserted it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had proven to be a "significant input" in diplomacy", he remarked.
