Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Prison Memoir Documenting Two Dozen Days Incarcerated

The ex-president of France plans a book this autumn called Notes from a Cell, detailing his time endured behind bars.

This news emerged just 11 days following the former president gained freedom while he contests his conviction related to illegal collaboration connected to efforts to obtain political financing linked to the government of the late Libyan dictator.

Life Behind Bars: Personal Reflections

“Inside jail one sees little, and activities are scarce,” he notes in one passage, implying the account is more about his thoughts during solitary confinement rather than a broader observation of the packed and troubled French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, not present in that facility, where noise is constant sound,” he adds. “The racket unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, inner life is strengthened behind bars.”

Court Appearance: Describing the Ordeal

At his release request hearing, he participated via screen from inside the facility, depicting prison life as exhausting. He had told the court: “I wish to commend the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this ordeal tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a trial forced upon me. I confess it’s hard, it’s very hard. It has an impact all who experience it due to its intensity.”

First of Its Kind

Sarkozy, who served as France’s president for a five-year term, set a precedent as past president of an EU country and the first postwar leader of France to serve time in prison.

Before entering jail he had said he would use his time to write a book.

Books in Prison

It is not certain if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the volumes he took into prison: a life story of Jesus spanning two books plus the novel by Dumas the classic tale, a plot where a blameless person is sentenced to jail but escapes to seek vengeance.

Prison Conditions

The former leader remained in solitary confinement to protect him in a room of about nine sq metres featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility in Paris. Security personnel occupied the next cell.

Sources mentioned that he consumed only yoghurts while inside because he feared prison cuisine could have been tampered with. He had facilities for self-catering but he turned this down, as per accounts. Unclear remains whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, who visited his client each day during the incarceration, stated during proceedings security would be better out of prison compared to inside. “There were menacing messages, heard shouts during nighttime and the urgent intervention in a neighbouring cell during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Charges and Sentence

He entered custody last month following a French court gave him five years in prison for criminal conspiracy in connection with efforts to obtain campaign funds for his 2007 presidential race.

He denies wrongdoing and has appealed against the verdict, and a fresh trial planned for next spring.
