New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities released video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in March.
