Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.
An new initialism emerged a couple of months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is specific to Gaza, per insights from doctors including paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to care for a young patient who has lost their entire family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary in numerous doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being deliberately targeted.
A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire
Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that genocidal acts are ongoing. Authorities rejects these claims, consistent with how it denies everything it is charged with. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, we are told, is what global togetherness manifests as.
The contest, notably prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems entirely distinct.
Contradictory Principles
Forget the fact that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that global media are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues While Ignoring Profound Human Cost
The contest turns 70 next year – almost double the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it historically embodied. A competition that once promoted peace has devolved into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
