Educator Slain and 25 Girls Abducted in Firefight at Nigerian School
Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The gang of attackers stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.
The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, an official report indicated.
A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Eyewitnesses described a considerable contingent of armed individuals, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.
Local residents told reporters that the armed men then led a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.
In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for militant organizations, who frequently execute kidnappings to seek ransom payments or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
