Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
