A Pair of Cuba-Destined Humanitarian Sailboats Reported Unaccounted For subsequent to Setting Sail from Mexican Waters.
A comprehensive rescue and recovery effort is currently under way in the Caribbean waters for two missing sailing vessels loaded with aid cargo journeying from Mexico to Cuba.
Naval Search and Rescue Missions Initiated
The Mexican government has deployed navy personnel and search planes to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board at least 9 personnel, according to a military release.
The boats had been scheduled to make landfall in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their docking, authorities reported.
Background of Relief to the Nation
The Caribbean nation has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through multiple power outages across the country.
"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are outfitted with suitable safety systems and emergency beacons," a spokesperson involved in the effort commented.
The nine-person crew are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.
"Our team is collaborating completely with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.
Earlier Relief Mission
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had carried 14 tons of donated goods to the nation.
That ship, dubbed "a new Granma" in reference to the yacht in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to launch the revolution in the mid-20th century, carried photovoltaic panels, drugs, baby formula, bicycles and provisions.
Broader Political Backdrop
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba since January, when a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.
The United Nations have since warned of "dire" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50k operations postponed in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.
Foreign policy tensions have intensified over the past months, with remarks from different representatives highlighting the complex situation regarding relations.
Responding to recent comments, a senior official from Cuba insisted that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Indications suggest that initial phases of negotiations had begun, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.
The Mexican navy affirmed it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its command to locate the sailboats and secure the security of the sailors.
To date, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
